“Weird Al” Yankovic’s career as a musician/comedian began in 1979, when he recorded his first parody, “My Bologna,” a spoof of the Knack’s hit “My Sharona.” The song aired on the nationally syndicated Dr. Demento Show and was included on his 1983 self-titled debut album.
Yankovic has spoofed many superstar performers through his studio collections, including Michael Jackson with his wildly popular singles “Eat It” and “Fat,” Madonna with “Like A Surgeon,” and Nirvana with “Smells Like Nirvana.”
He has released 12 studio albums and five compilations since 1983, including Dare To Be Stupid (1985), Even Worse (1988), Off The Deep End (1992) and Alapalooza (1993).
The 1996 certified platinum release Bad Hair Day featured five parodies, including the hit songs “Amish Paradise,” a spoof of Coolio’s Grammy Award-winning “Gangsta’s Paradise,” and “Gump,” an ode to the feature film Forrest Gump utilizing the melody of The President’s of the United States’ smash single, “Lump.” The album reached number 14 on Billboard’s 200 Top-Selling Albums chart and remains Yankovic’s best-selling album to date.
Yankovic’s 1999 release, Running With Scissors, features “The Saga Begins” a Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace spin-off of “American Pie” and “It’s All about the Pentiums.”
Poodle Hat (2003), won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album and features 12 songs, including “Couch Potato” a parody of Eminem’s Oscar winning “Lose Yourself.”
In 2006, Straight Outta Lynwood reached number 10 on Billboard’s 200 Top-Selling Albums Chart and features the single “White & Nerdy,” a parody of Chamillionaire’s hit “Ridin.”
His latest release, the digital-only Internet Leaks (2009), is his third EP and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album for the 52nd Grammy Awards.
The Essential "Weird Al" Yankovic was released in October 2009 and is a jam-packed 2-CD collection of Yankovic’s best work from his 12 studio albums with 38 songs and more than two and a half hours of music, which has been all beautifully remastered. The compilation also includes a full-color 24-page booklet.
In addition to Yankovic’s three Grammy Awards, he also has nine Grammy nominations, including more than 20 gold and platinum records in the U.S. and Canada, a feature film, three best-selling home videos and Showtime and MTV specials.
“Weird Al” Yankovic is part of the Belle Tire Concert Series.
