The Fisher Theatre of Detroit Review - "The Crown Jewel of the United States"

(Detroit, MI) - If you're new to the Detroit Metropolitan Area and you'd like to experience the best in Broadway entertainment, then you need to attend one of the outstanding performances at the Fisher Theatre, located in the historic Fisher Building in Detroit at 3011 W. Grand Boulevard at 2nd Avenue. Not only will you see an amazing Broadway performance, but just to be in the Fisher Building is and experience in and of itself. Facility Manager, Jim Manduzzi said “What you see at the Fisher, you won’t see in other theatres.”

Before we explore the theatre you first must know some of the history of this amazing structure. The building was the dream of the Body-by-Fisher Brothers who hired the famous architect Albert Kahn to design what would become known as the “Crown Jewel of The United States.”

Fisher Building At Night

Albert Kahn was given carte blanche and encouraged to use the best materials, craftsmen, and contractors to bring their vision into reality. The groundbreaking took place in August of 1927 and amazingly by December of 1928 the building was not only complete, but was already 60% occupied. In 1978, the Fisher Building was listed in the National Historic Register.

Fisher Theatre Second Avenue Entrance

As you drive up to the Fisher Theatre for a night performance you see the front entrance aglow with its golden doors inviting all who pass by. Mr. Manduzzi notes that parking is complimentary with the purchase of your ticket. In addition, there are restaurants within walking distance of the theatre so theatregoers can enjoy a meal or a drink before or after the performance.

Fisher Theatre Outer Lobby

Once inside the outer lobby, one marvels at the exquisite and breathtaking quality of design. The artistry appeals to the senses and it's hard not to feel a sense of history while approaching the theatre entrance. From the floor to the walls, from the fixtures to the ceiling murals, the decor creates an ambiance that is certain to imbue theatre patrons with a positive frame of mind before entering the theatre for the performance.

Fisher Theatre Main Lobby

The main lobby welcomes patrons with a clean and open feel, and provides ample room to greet family and friends who may be meeting for the show.

Fisher Theatre Lower Level Lounge

The lower level lounge is a cool place to sit and converse prior to the theatre doors being opened to the main theatre, or during intermission.

Fisher Theatre Main Stage

Once in the main theatre, one can't help but be impressed by the warm golden tones of the beautiful decor. Both the view and the acoustics in the theatre are incredible. I was amazed at the quality of the view and sound from every seat I tried out in the theatre, including the back rows of the main floor, the mezzanine, and the balcony. I was duly impressed from every vantage point. From the last row in the balcony section I could clearly hear the footsteps of people walking across the stage!

Whatever seat you purchase, you are assured a wonderful audio and visual experience of the show. For great Broadway entertainment, you'll want to make the Fisher Theatre your choice. When it comes to Broadway shows in Detroit, it’s the only show in town!
