Coachella 2017: The Festival Fashion Of Rihanna, Kendall Jenner, And Selena Gomez

If you’ve been waiting for a sign that summer’s on its way, then let the Coachella festival act as your starter’s pistol to the season. Though relatively early in April, its first weekend unofficially marks the start of that magical time of the year, leading the pack of summer festivals that are scheduled over the next several months. It also kicks off the beginning of summer fashion as people head to Indio, California to be seen as much as they intend to watch their favorite acts.

While Lady Gaga’s EDM-inspired set and Radiohead’s unlucky technical difficulties made headlines all over the Internet, the festival-wear worn by celebritiescemented Coachella’s status as a fashion event. Anything goes at the festival, though thankfully it looks like we’ve closed the casket on such looks as flower crowns, fringes, and culturally appropriated headdresses. Some looks are over-the-top, only-at-Coachella getups, while others are grimy call backs to the 90s. We’ve scoured pics from Coachella’s first weekend to find the hottest ones, so you can base your summer style on these ultra-cool festival outfits.

When you expect to spend 3 days in the desert amongst throngs of drugged-out festival goers, you’d think you’d pack sensible, if fun, clothes so you can camp without dying of heat. But that’s just another reason why you and RiRi are completely different people. Sensible wouldn’t be the word to describe what Rihanna wore to Coachella, but what would be the point in practical clothing choices when you have 7 certified platinum albums? Or when you have unlimited access to the VIP areas?

Tagged on Instagram as “phresh out”, her bold crystal embroidered Gucci body suit looked amazing at night under the lights of camera flashes. With a price tag that makes an NYC studio apartment rent look reasonable, her Gucci encrusted mesh top and leggings, topped with a Gucci tank top and acid wash jean shorts, totalled $8,480. This headline-grabbing look took centre stage at the festival, but let’s be honest with each other, once she added her diamond encrusted mesh mask, the daring fashion choice took on the look of a disco ballgimp suit from our nightmares.

Other celebs embraced the diamond look but to a lesser extent than the Worksinger. Kendall Jenner, fresh off her Pepsi commercial disaster, wore a sequin bra and a Lorraine Schwarts choker. She arrived with Hailey Baldwin who also opted for a crystalized bra and plenty of chunky, glitzed out chokers, reminding us that there can never be too many accessories at Coachella.

All white monochromatic outfits were another huge trend this year, with Kate Bosworth and Katy Perry heading up the best and worst looks. Kate Bosworth, who used Coachella to debut her line of sunglasses, oozed cool in her breezy white ensemble and black sandals. The Still Alice star admitted to skipping the actual festival green — which is a good thing if she wanted to keep those cuffs in pristinecondition.

Katy Perry didn’t share such compunctions, as she was seen wearing her Thai Nguyen Atelier white mesh sequin dress and matching bunny flats for an appropriately Easter-themed look. The This Is How We Do singer showed off her stomach and her new hair cut in an unusual but weather-appropriate number at a private party.

If diamond encrusted anything or head-to-toe white isn’t in your future, the looks you can easily recreate in your own life arethis year’s festival favorites: distressed denim, printed dresses, chunky boots, and crop tops. Even celebs like Selena Gomez, in her HVN daisy dress in bright blue, and YaraShahidi, wearing a $60 dress from H&M,were sporting these trendy garments.

Use the street-style at Coachella 2017 as inspiration for your outfits for a normal weekend around town or at the next festival like the Governor’s Ball or Panorama. While you’re pairing your crop top with vintage distressed jeans, don’t forget to accessorize. Everything contributes towards your festival style, including that perfect little bag, a pair of tinted round sunnies, and the color-coordinated bandana around your neck.

Even your smartphone should be properly kitted out for the season, with customized Android or iPhone skins from the manufacturers (and music lovers) at dbrand. With grime-free material, these decals can save your phone from muddy festival fields, but more importantly, when you check out dbrand.com/shop you can design a decal that fits your street style perfectly this year.Whether you opt for the monochromatic look of Katy Perry’s white maxi or choose a marble design to offset your whimsical floral a la YaraShahidi, you’ll find something you’ll love.

Coachella may be one of the hottest musical festivals of the year, but it also sets a very high bar for the season’s fashion. Take inspiration where you see it. Though you may not have the confidence or budget to pull off RiRi’s diamond body suit in your everyday life, the summer’s festivals give you an excuse to dress outside your comfort zone. In any case, we’re willing to bet you can find something that suits your style and wallet just in time for the next weekend at Coachella.
